Reason Gives No Answers

Newport Street Gallery will present an exhibition of works from the collection from 11 September until 10 November 2019. The exhibition, ‘Reason Gives No Answers’, will take place in four of Newport Street Gallery’s six spaces and will coincide with a solo exhibition of new paintings by John Squire.

‘Reason Gives No Answers’ will feature a selection of over 50 works – some rarely exhibited – by more than 30 artists. Including major contemporary artists alongside emerging names, the exhibition includes sculptures by Sarah Lucas, early works by Haim Steinbach, geometric paintings by Peter Halley, works by Sherrie Levine, large-scale paintings by Gary Hume and one of William S. Burroughs’ shotgun paintings.

Other highlights include works by Angus Fairhurst, Helen Frankenthaler, Jannis Kounellis, Tanya Ling, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol and Franz West. ‘Reason Gives No Answers’ is the second show of selected works from the collection after ‘Simulation/Skin’ in 2017.

‘Reason Gives No Answers’ will coincide with an exhibition of new, large-scale oil paintings by John Squire, based on photographs taken by the artist or found online. Squire alters the images using editing software, which he overloads to prompt visual glitches. These partially distorted, fragmented scenes are then enlarged from their original small-screen format and painted in oil on canvas. Squire is a British artist and musician who lives and works near Macclesfield, Cheshire.
